Update (24/10/24): Publisher Ubisoft has issued a statement in relation to this story, confirming to Kotaku that Rayman is currently undergoing an "exploration phase" within two of its studios.

"We are pleased to confirm Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently started an exploration phase on the Rayman brand," said a spokesperson for the publisher. "The project is still in its early stages, and we will share more details later."

This more or less lines up with Insider Gaming's previous report, which claims a Rayman Remake is in the works, with Ubisoft Milan spearheading development. If the teams working on this are still exploring ideas, we imagine we won't be seeing this game for quite some time, but it's nice to know the platforming hero may be making a return in the future.

Original Story: It's been over 10 years since the release of Rayman Legends, the last main game in Ubisoft's mascot platformer series. There hasn't been any whiff of a new title over the years — that is, until now, thanks to a new report from Insider Gaming.

According to the site, Ubisoft is working on a Rayman Remake. While it's not made clear which Rayman game is purportedly being brought back, we presume it's the character's debut entry.

The report, citing sources "close to the situation", says the remake is being produced under the codename 'Project Steambot', with development being led by Ubisoft Milan. Michel Ancel, who created the Rayman series, is apparently on board in a consultancy position.

Furthermore, "around a dozen" members of staff who previously worked on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown are now contributing to the Rayman Remake, the report says. This follows a recent story about the disbandment of the team that developed the well-received Metroidvania; Ubisoft said in a statement that staff had been shifted to other projects.

Stranger things have certainly happened than a remake of Rayman — this is definitely plausible, but if true, it may be a while before we see the game itself. We'd certainly like to see the character return, especially after Origins and Legends, which are both fantastic.

What do you think? Would you like to see a Rayman Remake? Spin those fists in the comments section below.

And yet Ubisoft just shut down the team that makes Rayman games their decision making will never cease to heavily amuse and baffle me 😅

I would rather just get a new game in the Origins/Legends style personally but this could still be cool. It'd be nice to see Rayman back again. Always felt like the forgotten but fantastic platformer.

I just hope they remove those annoying online trophies for Legends if they do a remake. I remember grinding for months those daily challenges to finally earn the platinum.

I would hope this isn't just Rayman 1 in Origins style. Really feel like Rayman 1 is fine as is (yes, warts and all). Rayman 2, however, would be great to get a remake of.

Too many sidescrollers. I loved Origins and Legends, but still.
Ubisoft is always so behind in trends. I bet they saw the Astrobot succes and were like
"Hey! We have our own mascot, we can make that, but way worse!"

I'm sure it's gonna be a 3D platformer. They always try so hard, but they're so lame it's pathetic.

Great to hear. Rayman was golden era Ubisoft! I’m down for it!

Origins was superb. Legends was even better. Castle rock never fails to make me smile.

Rayman 2 was brilliant too. 1 was good but flawed and couldn't get into 3, it just felt.... off

Hope it is Origins since Legends is fine on ps4 (love playing the whoa black betty music level)

I never played the og, just 2 and Origins/Legends. I can't imagine if they remade the first that it would really resemble that game at all afterwards. The series has come a long way since then.

I guess I also am a bit skeptical of this story though. Is Rayman a good seller!? I know we got Legends after Origins, but I at least figured it made sense to use the engine again. Never seemed like Origins was a hit? I loved it, so I'm glad it must have done okay.

If true, then color me interested. I have missed seeing that limbless son of a gun in his own game again for a long time now.

On the one hand, Rayman. On the other hand, modern era Ubisoft.

Considering the state Ubisoft is currently in, let’s see if this actually gets a release. Or like @Danloaded said, it’ll just be another empty promise remake everyone will be waiting forever for.

Judging by the codename, this sounds like a remake to Rayman 2. Quite fitting, as this year marks its 25th anniversary

I'd prefer a sequel to legends or at least a re release of legends and Origins with 4k and HDR

@RoomWithaMoose
Rayman 2 would be a better one to remake but I expect that they’ll do hiccup man first hope they make it a little easier though as it’s rock solid and make the saving better

@SrpskaArtilerija
Rayman 2 is my favourite of the trilogy along as they do one of voice acting and not just the gibberish voices or an option for both.
As long as they do a good job of it I’ll be happy

Oh nevermind, it's a different prince of persia team. Haha.

Still waiting for Rayman 4. Or release 3 Remastered for PS4/5. Being locked to PS3 is a travesty

@Dragoon1994 I’d prefer having both options, as well as the mini-games from the Dreamcast version combined with an improved version of the open-world hub that the PS2 “port” implemented

@Ceridane took me about 3 months to get the Platinum in Legends. Once I got it I synced my trophies and deleted Legends from my PS4. Haven't touched it since because I was worn out by it. Too bad because it's one of the best platformers I've played. I'd argue it's better than the New Super Mario Bros games.

I don't know how the original can be improved. It's still the best one.
Origins is pretty good too though.

Just give me a new/improved/remaster of Rayman 2 The Great Escape already... In an Era of Remasters & Remakes (which I'm generally fine with tbh) Ubisoft, who released and rereleased Rayman 2 for like EVERYTHING available between 1999 to 2013, hasn't bothered to release Rayman 2 on a home console since that Enhanced/Remake on back on PS2 (Rayman Revolution... I guess we could count the PS1 Classic Version on PS3 as well? Whatever)

TLDR: Just give me Rayman 2 on PS5 already, let Night Dive Studios handle it and combine everything/best parts of the PS1 & Dreamcast Versions (like how they handled Powerslave Exhumed for example) at 4k/60fps and with Trophies.

Geez the comments here are so skeptical. I know Ubisoft isn't making the best games and releases them in a broken state but they are not always like that. I mean, if Ubisoft Milan did a fantastic job on the Mario + Rabbids games then i'm sure they will cook with a Rayman remake. Michel Ancel is also involved with the new game so it'll be a hit with no misses.

@Ceridane yeah I remember grinding for literal months to get that last trophy for platinum, that would be my only criticism about Legends, otherwise fantastic game.

Those music levels in Legends were incredible. The one based on Whoa, Black Betty in particular never fails to make me grin from ear to ear.
