What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tom Hanks makes Turner and Hooch more entertaining than it might look on paper, but ultimately, this is still a deeply silly comedy about a cop and a canine.

Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Chris Bennion Times (UK) Sure it’s predictable — Turner hates dogs, Hooch trashes his flat, they eventually bond and solve the crime — but it’s goofy, knockabout fun and the big, loveable pooch nearly matches Hanks for easy screen charisma. Apr 11, 2024 Full Review Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Variety Staff Variety The rather mechanical style of director Roger Spottiwoode (who took over the film after original director Henry Winkler departed) fails to enliven the stereotypical criminal proceedings. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Geoff Andrew Time Out From the moment when Hooch first appears to the strains of Strauss' 'Also sprach Zarathustra', the gags can be smelt a mile off, and the thriller elements are as hackneyed as an episode of Murder She Wrote. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Jeff Simon Buffalo News Hanks' taste in picking movie projects continues to be abominable. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Tracy Moore Common Sense Media Dog-buddy comedy has lots of slobber and some violence. Rated: 3/5 Aug 26, 2014 Full Review Turner & Hooch | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com I laughed heartily with the film, but I almost went cross-eyed trying to consider what the hell this script actually contained before Disney, five screenwriters, and two directors tore it apart. Joanna R Recently re-watched this with my sons, who loved it (apart from the ending). Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Snuggly This hasn't aged well. Too much of the same (dog destroying things), which is not that funny in 2023. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Jack t Well guys, this is it. Remember when I finished reviewing Three Men and a Baby? Well I'm going to review a movie that is funny. There's a scene where Tom Hanks telling Hooch to shut up and Tom got locked out, that's funny. And the others scenes are funny as well. Now here's the part what I don't like, the ending. The ending had me in tears! Yeah, where Hooch the dog had died and I was in tears all the way through the end, so you might be thinking that I don't like this movie. Well, No I do think it's a good movie and there are some funny scenes in this. And that is why I told you I was looking the least to reviewing that movie. Just enjoy that movie and be happy. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review justin W im not sure why people rate this movie so poorly ... its a classic... that being said... its not like its his BEST BEST BEST... he has some far better movies but no way it should be rated as low as it is .. some of the movies ranks on this site make me wonder who be trolling Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/22 Full Review Boneyard L This movie derives its comedy from a dog destroying everything much to the chagrin of a fastidious man. If that sounds funny, this movie is for you. The murder investigation and romantic subplots are barely window dressing in comparison to the ‘destructive dog' narrative. That being said it's very well done and all that, just be aware your mileage may vary wildly.Closest comparison: It's like Lethal Weapon by way of Beethoven.Setting: DramaPlot: DetectiveTone: RomCom Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/22 Full Review Kimberly M if I can watch the movie for free they keep letting me download all this other stuff and I can't watch it it won't let me saying it's not free Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/22 Full Review Read all reviews
