A v useful blog on #asessment #peerassessment from The English & Media Centre : read the conclusions…“We’ll leave you with our top 5 takeaways for using self and peer assessment meaningfully in English: 1. Focus students’ comments on what is there, not what’s missing. 2. Respond as a reader to the writing: how does it make you feel/think/respond? When? Why? 3. Support students with questions, not comments – don't tell them what to say, show them how to think. 4. It takes time to do well - both inside lessons, and in terms of a period of persistence and experimentation – and it won’t always work. Play the long game. 5. Keep experimenting – for example, combine self and peer feedback, get students to read multiple students’ work – to prevent students becoming disengaged in the process.”https://lnkd.in/et5ndGqg

Decodable texts are deliberately crafted to enhance recognition of words by providing focused practice on specific patterns. Leveled texts cater to individuals who are in the process of mastering reading skills based on language codes. While these texts do offer opportunities for meaningful engagement that should be integrated into teaching, they do not necessarily serve as a rich source of academic language or follow a knowledge-centered approach to literacy education.Regarding leveled texts, my perspective is one of confirmation and expansion. This aligns with my consultative approach, which aims to identify methodologies that enhance rather than contradict established traditions.I recommend examining Nancy Hennessy Blueprint for Comprehension Instruction for further insights. Can you share some instructional strategies you've found effective in supporting this endeavor? #scienceofreading #readingcomprehension

Cultivating a ‘purpose’ rather than a ‘love’ of reading culture in schools 📚 Getting students to build a ‘love for reading’ seems to be at the top of every school's to-do list. And let’s face it, it can be a tough sell…They lament over the fact that students ‘aren’t reading enough’ and they have tried everything from DEAR (drop everything and read) sessions during the day, recording and holding students accountable for the reading they are doing or reading entire novels to them during class time. The alternative is to not focus on building readers who love reading, but rather building readers who understand when and how to read for PURPOSE. One of those purposes might be for entertainment, absolutely, but we also read for information, for comparison, for clarity, for evaluation, for reflection or for inspiration - to name a few.Rather than forcing students to read narrative texts, schools can inspire students to read for different purposes and contexts. Imagine if a few times a term, students were asked to:💡Choose a text to read and then teach your classmates something you learned from that reading.💡 Choose two texts (one online, one print) and compare the effectiveness in their ability to achieve their purpose.💡Find a text that reflects your own experiences/perspective/opinions💡Choose a text and evaluate its effectiveness (this could be instructions, an informative text, an article etc)💡Make a list of every type of reading you do in one day (considering text messages, signs, instructions, cereal packets etc)💡What is something you would like to get better at? Choose an informational text that can help you do this.#students #teachers #education #english #edtech #elearning #educators #highschool #secondaryeducation #teacher #hsc #vce #hscenglish #vceenglish #writing #teaching #reading

"Schools wait until spring to plan their summer reading program, but making it a year-round project is the most effective way to make sure your students have as many books as you can get into their hands, give yourself time to build excitement, check in to maintain momentum, and help all of your students avoid the summer slide, no matter what language they speak at home." Key points for building summer reading support. Thanks you Claire Hagen Alvarado, Ed.L.D. #LearningIsForEveryone Capstone

The Language Experience Approach (LEA) is a fun and effective strategy to enhance reading and writing skills. Students share experiences, describe them orally, write about them, and then read what they wrote. This hands-on approach builds vocabulary, strengthens literacy skills, and fosters student engagement. Through LEA, students learn to recognize words they're familiar with orally in print, practice vocabulary, and boost writing skills. Additionally, they gain confidence in their reading and writing abilities by reading their own work.#literacyskills #languagelearning #educationstrategy #readingandwriting #studentengagement #handsonlearning #classroomculture #vocabularybuilding #teachertips #learningexperiencehttps://lnkd.in/dYGtMrb9
