Gold Complex Fire Grows to Around 2,300 Acres, Power Outage Possible in Portola (2024)

Update, 9:35 p.m.:

The Gold Complex Fire burning in Plumas County has grown.

According to a release from the U.S. Forest Service the fire has grown to around 2,300 acres, an increase of around 700 acres from their last release.

Firefighters reportedly made good progress on the fire on Tuesday on its north side, where it is at the greatest risk of damaging buildings.

The Forest Service did not have a containment estimate for the fire Tuesday night.

Update, 6:30 p.m.:

According to a post on X by Liberty Utilities, NV Energy notified them that it will turn off its line serving Portola due to the Gold Complex Fire.

Customers in Portola will experience a power outage due to NV Energy turning off the power.

This will happen by 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the post.

NV Energy has not given an estimated time of restoration, so Liberty Utilities is asking residents to prepare accordingly.

According to the California Department of Transportation District 2 in an online post, State Route 89 has re-opened from County Road A-15 to Calpine, which had originally been closed due to the fire.

They also advise that some navigation websites are showing State Route 70 as being closed but at this time, State Route 70 remains open.

The Gold Complex Fire in Plumas County has grown overnight to 1,600+ acres.

The lightning-sparked fires consist of what were once known as theMill, Mill 2, and Mill 3 fires as well as the Smith Fire, near Portola, just south of Clio.

As of Tuesday morning, the complex remains 0% contained and evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect.

Evacuated areas are being patrolled by law enforcementto ensure their safety and security.

People who havedecidedto stay in an evacuated area are asked to stay in their homes and not drive around or explore.

Plumas County has activated its Emergency Operations Center, which is managed bythe Plumas County Office of Emergency Services.

A shelter has been opened at the Quincy High School located at 6 Quincy Junction Road in Quincy.

Animals can be taken to the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds for shelter.

Sierra Nevada Journeys Camp in Portola has been evacuated due to the fire and says that all their campers and staff are safe.

July 22nd at 7:36 p.m. Update

Plumas National Forest firefighters are currently fighting four suspected lightning fires in Plumas County.

The Mill, Mill 2 and Mill 3 fires are burning near Whitehawk Ranch. The Mill Fire is the largest at 683 acres, with Mill 2 and Mill 3 smaller at 75 acres each and to the west according to a post on the U.S. Forest Service - Plumas National Forest Facebook page.

A fourth fire, identified as the Smith Fire, is burning north of California State Highway 80 between Smith Peak and Maybe. The Smith Fire is about 50 acres.

All four fires have the potential to grow due to wind, slope, and ongoing dry conditions where they are burning, the Forest Service post says.

All four fires are threatening buildings, including the communities of Whitehawk Ranch, Clio, Gold Mountain, Delleker, Lake Davis Area, and the south and west sides of Portola.

A wildfire burning in Plumas County in California prompted evacuation orders and warnings as well as a road closure onMonday.

The fire is burning nearWhitehawk Golf Course in Plumas County.

Evacuation orders are in place for the area north of California 89 and south of County Road A15, includingportions of Nakoma and Gold Mountain, due to a fire dubbed the Mill Fire according toa social media post from the Plumas County Sheriff's Office.

People are advised to evacuatewest to Quincy High School in Quincy, California.

The Sheriff's Office also posted evacuation warnings for the area of Gold Mountain,County Road A15, Whitehawk, and south of Portola.

The Sierra County Sheriff's Office is also closely monitoring it according to a post from the agency on Facebook.

California 89 is closed southbound at County Road A15 and northbound at Calpine due to the fire.
